Built between the Erei and Iblei hills Caltagirone’s public buildings and apartments all feature examples of the amazing ceramics which makes strolling around the town so enjoyable. World famous for ceramics production since the Middle Ages, the town’s stairway of Santa Maria del Monte has 142 steps with each step individually decorated with ceramic tiles. You will visit the workshops of local artisans and if you wish, purchase these unique ceramics. Just a few kilometers away is the Niscemi’s Cork Plantation with 3,000 hectares of natural reserve dominated by the Cork Oaks. Worth seeing.
